Anthracite Filter Media

What is Anthracite Filter Media?

There are many types of coal each with their own unique and special properties, and anthracite is one form we supply here at Asiacarb as it has a very high content of carbon. It has a hard surface which gives it a shiny appearance and it has been used for centuries in various applications, but the main reason it is so popular is for its efficacy in water filtration.

How Do Multilayer Filtration Systems With Anthracite Work?

Also known as dual filtration or multi-media filtration, these systems are set up to provide differing levels of filtration of water as it passes through varying stages. It is one of the most effective types of water filtration as it begins by pumping water through large media such as gravel to remove the bigger contaminants and then it is gradually guided to smaller and smaller media.

When the water passes through the bed of anthracite the small pores are able to capture everything from suspended solids such as dirt and silt to algae, bacteria and organic compounds. It can even remove metals like iron and manganese which can have an effect on the taste and odor of water.

Why is Anthracite Filter Media Used for Multi-Media Filtration?

Anthracite is used as an upper layer in water filtration systems along with both larger and smaller media such as sand and fine gravel. During multiple backwashing cycles to clean water the light weight of the anthracite allows it to stay suspended in the medium and produce a cleaner, more efficient purification than other forms such as activated carbon.

Thanks to its large surface area and highly porous formulation this filter media captures very fine particles. It can tolerate a wide range of contaminants and pollutants and allows for a faster flow rate than if sand was used on its own. The suitable porosity of anthracite also displays a high level of resistance to a wide range of common chemicals.

As anthracite filter media is so hard it can be used repeatedly in the same system with high resistance to wear, both from the chemicals it filters as well as physically from contact with other pieces of anthracite, sand and gravel. This strength is needed in high flow environments which makes it useful for use on an industrial scale.
